All those beautiful age-appropriate toys available in their room and your children choose to play with a cardboard box? Do not despair – that is absolutely common and we’ll explain why this is one of an educators favourite resources: the open-ended quality of a box means that children can use their own ideas and imagination, making the box a tool for exploration instead of limiting it. In this video made by the teachers at Gwendolen House, they have created a playful game for babies to toss balls in and take them out by cutting out circles from the cardboard box. While doing that, they are developing fine and gross motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, while grasping and tossing. Pro tip: support your child’s communication and language development by labelling the actions, for example saying “ball in”, “yellow ball in”.
