Areas of Learning Personal Social And Emotional Development Communication and Language Physical Development Literacy Mathematics Understanding The World Expressive Arts and Design Personal Social And Emotional Development Making relationships What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I enjoy playing next to other children. Introduce me to other children, so I can gradually learn how to play with them. I can explore independently but rely on you as a secure base for reassurance, e.g. if I feel tired/upset. Let me explore the surrounding environment and play with other children, but take in consideration that I'll need a special grown-up around for when I am feeling upset or tired. I cooperate with you when playing games, e.g. rolling a ball back and forth. Play games with me, for example, rolling a ball back and forth or singing "row your boat" together. Sense of self What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I explore new toys/environments, but I make sure to check that you are there for when I need you. Encourage me to explore new toys and activities whilst having a special grown-up around. I am beginning to make believe by pretending, e.g. pretending that my toys are something else. Show me how can I use my toys to pretend they are something else, e.g. taking a soft toy for a walk in my trolley, or pretending to cook in the kitchen corner. I am beginning to do things independently, as I develop confidence in my own abilities. Show me photos of myself doing different types of activities and tell me about what I am doing. Managing feelings and behaviour What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I might look worried if I hear someone crying, or happy when someone I know smiles at me. Point at the characters in books, and let me guess if they look happy or sad. I might feel frustrated/have tantrums, but that's because my will and determination are developing. When I am feeling upset reassure me by validating my feelings, for example, by saying: "I can see that you are upset, let's find out why". I can follow a few boundaries, with your encouragement and support. Praise me for my efforts when I follow some of the rules you established, e.g. when I am kind to others, or I help tidying up my toys after play. I am becoming aware that some things are mine, some are shared and some belong to others. Let me help you with sharing (e.g. a snack): "one for me, one for mummy, one for daddy". Communication and Language Listening and attention What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? As you read stories to me, I like to listen to the sounds that different characters and things make. Use different intonations for different characters and make the sounds of animals and things when you are sharing a book with me. I try to join in with sounds and actions when we sing nursery rhymes together. Sing nursery rhymes with me and encourage me to mirror the songs' actions. If I am enjoying an activity and giving it my full attention, I may appear not to hear when you talk to me. Talk to me about the sounds we can hear when we go to the shops or the park. Understanding What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I can point or select an object when you say it's name or ask me to find it. Let me help you with unpacking the shopping by telling me to find different things like "find the apples" or "find the crackers". I can understand simple sentences, e.g. a three word sentence such as "Throw the ball." Play games with me where I have to follow instructions like "roll the ball" or "throw the ball". Speaking What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I copy your words and expressions, e.g. "All gone" or "Oh dear". Use a few familiar expressions on a regular basis, such as "all gone" or "oh dear". I am beginning to put two words together in a sentence, e.g. "want teddy". If I say the word "car", repeat the word back to me by adding an extra word, such as "blue car". My vocabulary is expanding and I can use a few everyday words, e.g. "banana", "go", "sleep", "hot". Show me flashcards or books with new keywords and encourage me to repeat the words after you. I am beginning to ask you simple questions. Ask me simple questions, e.g. give me choices about what I can have to eat, like "pear or apple?". I talk about people and things that are not present, e.g. when we read a book that reminds me about it. Let me look at a family album, so I can point at the people in the pictures and talk about them. Physical Development Moving and handling What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I can walk upstairs while holding your hand. Encourage me to walk up steps and stepping sets, as you hold my hand. I crawl backwards on my knees, holding on to the steps, to come downstairs. Let me crawl on my knees downstairs, starting with a small set of steps. I build simple constructions with blocks, e.g. a small tower. Show me how I can balance and fit blocks together, e.g. to build a tower. I know that when I move a crayon in different directions, it will make similar marks on paper. Give me chunky chalks, crayons, pens, and large sheets of paper, so I can explore mark making. Health and self-care What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I can tell you which foods and drinks I like or dislike. Introduce me to a wide range of foods. I like to try new foods to eat. Let me use all my senses to explore and play with food items, for example, raw vegetables, fruit purees, bread slices... I can hold a lidded cup in my hands and drink without spilling much. Let me drink from a cup without lid.. I can tell you when my nappy or pants need to be changed. Before changing my nappy, ask me if there's "poo" or "wee" in it. I am beginning to be aware of when I need to do a wee or poo. Identify behaviours, asking me "Are you going poop?", to help me recognize my urge to "wee" and "poop". I know what a potty or toilet are used for.. Show me storybooks about children who are learning how to use the potty. I enjoy finding my clothes and I try to put them on as you dress and undress me. Let me wash my hands and face by myself and try to put my shoes on. Literacy Reading What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I enjoy looking at pictures in books and listening to nursery rhymes, and I may have a few favourites. Create a cosy corner with cushions and books, for us to enjoy story time together. Writing What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? Before I can write, I need to learn how to use words and explore the marks I can make with my body.. Show me flashcards or books with new keywords and encourage me to repeat the words after you. Mathematics Numbers What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I know that when you hide a toy under fabric, I can find it there. Play peek-a-boo or hide and seek games with me. I am beginning to gather similar objects and put them together in groups or piles. Provide opportunities for me to explore materials that can be sorted by size or shape, e.g. toys such as animals and vehicles, blocks, cups or bottle caps. I can say some number names, in mixed order. Sing counting songs with me, using props such as finger puppets, toys or household objects; e.g. five rubber ducks to sing "five little ducks", when I am having a bath. Shape, space and measure What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? Sometimes, I can match pieces in a jigsaw board or fit shapes into spaces. Provide a variety of resources for me to practice fitting shapes into spaces, e.g. jigsaw puzzles, activity boards, cardboard boxes with holes... I create my own arrangements with blocks, such as towers or long lines across the floor. Show me how I can balance and fit blocks together, and let me have a go at creating my own structures. I like to fill and empty containers with water, sand and other materials. Give me containers of different sizes to play, e.g. cardboard and wooden boxes that fit into each other, buckets, pots and pans... I recognize a simple sequence of actions in my daily routine, e.g. I get dressed when I wake up. Establish a few routines at home, for example, wash hands before snack, always hold an adult's hand when crossing the street, or tidy up the toys after play. I know that something might happen when certain objects are present, e.g. a pair of shoes/going out. Use the language of time to tell me what's happening/what's going to happen, e.g. words such as "now", "next", or "later" - "We are going out now. We must put a jacket on". Understanding The World People and Communities What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I enjoy looking of pictures of those who are special to me, such as family members, friends or pets. Show me pictures of different families, focusing on diversity. I like to listen to stories about myself and about other children and their families. Tell me stories about our family and my friend's families. The World What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I shake, hit, look, feel and put objects in my mouth, to explore what I can do with them. Provide a variety of natural resources for me to explore with my senses, whilst making sure that they are safe/age-appropriate. I remember that certain objects belong in certain places. Encourage me to put my toys back into it's place, when I finish playing. I enjoy putting parts of objects together, e.g. a lid on a box. Let me play with objects that fit together, for example, pots and lids, containers and balls of different sizes, or shapes' activity boards. Technology What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I know that when I press a button on a toy something may happen, e.g. lights or sounds. Let me play with toys that require me to press a button to achieve a certain effect, such as a sound, or mechanical movement. I like to play with toys with buttons and flaps, especially when it makes a noise or something pops up. Show me how I can operate interactive toys to achieve certain effects, and then let me try to repeat these on my own. Expressive Arts and Design Exploring media and materials What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I use my body and my senses to explore lots of different objects and materials. Let me explore different types of materials and objects with my senses, even if I make a mess, e.g. mud play, body painting, flour and water play. I will jump, bounce and swing when I hear music. Play different types of music and encourage me to join in dancing games. I copy the actions that I see you doing, e.g. clapping or waving. Show me how to make different actions when we play or sing together, for example, stirring when we are playing in the kitchen corner, waving "bye bye" to the toy train, rolling hands to sing "roly-poly". I move my body when I hear music and I enjoy listening, singing and acting nursery rhymes. Play nursery rhymes and encourage me to dance with you. I am interested in exploring what happens when I move my hands over paint or other materials. Give me chunky crayons, chalks and finger paint, so I can make marks on paper. Being imaginative What can you expect me to do? How can you support me? I use my body to make marks in paint or mud, and sometimes I make sounds as I go, such as "weeeee". Encourage me to play outdoors, using natural resources as toys. I can pretend that one object represents another, e.g. a toy brick is a phone. Dedicate an area in my room/playroom for pretend play, with imaginative resources such as dressing up, pretend play sets, natural
