Every child is unique, and each child’s speech and language develop at different rates, from babble to words and then sentences. All of this is happening when children interact with adults in their lives, and it helps children make sense of the world around them. By age 1, children can recognise about 50 words; by age 3 they can recognise 1,000 words, and by age 5 about 10,000 words. In the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, Communication and Language is a prime area that underpins all the other areas of development.
